After a number of years without a true NSWMTB Cross Country series REAL INSURANCE, in conjunction with NSWMTB, have come to the fore and developed a new series of races for the Cross Country rider in 2012.
Whilst there are some very popular and well run Enduro events held throughout NSW there is really only club level racing available for those who like the single rider, multi-lap style XC events -that was until now!
Consisting of four races across some of the best MTB tracks in NSW, this series will determine who will be the state’s fastest XC rider in each category. Our aim is for this to be the premium XC racing program for mountain bike riders in NSW. It is designed to help develop riders in preparation for the national series at the end of the year, by providing top level competition, while still letting new comers to XC racing test their skills and fitness against simular riders. Riders of all abilities and fitness levels are catered for at these events.
Unlike Enduro style team racing, which goes all day, XC racing is based on the Olympic format (XCO) and is all over in less than 1:45hrs for Elite riders and much less for other categories. So this style of racing allows you to turn up, race your MTB and still be home in time for lunch.
Scheduled Races:
Round 1
Superbowl (Nowra) – 15th July
South Coast United Mountain bikers (SCUM)
Round 2
Fitzroy Falls - 5th August
Southern Highlands Cycling Club
Round 3
Yellomundee – 21st Oct
Western Sydney MTB club
Round 4
Ourimbah - 4th Nov
Central Coast MTB Club
With riders collecting points from every round they race, the series winner in each category will be those who have collected the highest points tally from their results based on all rounds entered. Riders can choose to race just the one round or race them all. Racing all rounds means you will be better placed on the leader board and have a better chance at taking out the series title as every race finisher is awarded points.
The last round, at Ourimbah in November, will also double as the 2012 NSW State Championships, so there is a big incentive to be on top of your game at Ourimbah. This race will still provide points for the series and acts as a stand-alone race for the Championship.
Real Insurance is throwing all of their promotional expertise and professionalism behind these events so riders can expect to enjoy the customary ‘big race vibe’ on race day. Real Insurance provisions include massive inflatable start / finish banners, champagne on the winner’s podium, customised race series leaders jerseys, photographers on track, regular series points & updates via the Cyclenation website and much more. Winners and place getters of each round will receive awards and recognition.
NSWMTB’s Cross Country rep, Mark McInnes, says, “it’s been three years in the making, but thanks to Real Insurance and Cyclenation, we finally have a truly State level XC series on our hands for 2012… We simply could not have put this series together without the support of someone like Real Insurance and we’re very grateful. All clubs involved have also played a very big part in getting this series off the ground and collectively we are very excited to see the return of some high level XC racing to NSW…. We are hoping this is the start of an annually run XC series…”
Entries will open soon via the MTBA Event website.
